About this Workshop:
Woodcut is considered to be the earliest of all printmaking methods. Students will directly draw their image onto a 16”x20” woodblock. They will begin carving their block after having different types of line carving demos to demonstrate the use and execution of black and white lines in the creation of an image, followed by printing their block. The emphasis in this class is to introduce the novice to the following techniques: types of wood, surface preparation, image design, carving techniques, tool maintenance, inking, and pressing a print. Students are encouraged to design their own image and can expect to complete a small edition of black and white prints at the completion of the workshop.
Please note: This workshop is physically intense from carving the woodblock to printing.
Level: All levels welcome – no previous woodcut experience necessary. Introduction to Relief Printing, or similar experience (6 hrs) is helpful, but not required.
Registration closes January 16, 2024. Material fees are included with your registration to cover items provided in class. A small list of additional materials needed will be provided with your confirmation.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:
Registration includes a $75 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including wood blocks, sandpaper, ink, gloves, and newsprint. Students will need to supply additional materials of their own, including:
- 1-2 idea sketches/pictures for the woodcut. *Important – Students will directly draw on the block, so please prepare completed design drawings. If you would like to transfer/trace your drawing onto a block, please do the design on a woodblock size (16”x 20”) paper, newsprint or thin paper recommended.*
- 5 sheets of Arnhem 1618 Printmaking Paper (White, 90lb, 22”x30”)
- Power Grip Carving Tools (Set of 7) – affordable, long lasting, and GREAT tools for woodcut
- (Optional) Power Grip carving knife chisel triangular, 1.5mm – recommended for fine line details and not included in the set.
- Flexcut Slipstrop Sharpening Kit
- Sharpie Permanent Markers (for drawing on woodblocks)
- 2-3 Permanent Sharpie BLACK (Fine)
- 1 Permanent Sharpie SILVER (Fine)
- 1 Permanent Sharpie BLACK (Chisel Tips)
- 1 Permanent Sharpie RED (Chisel Tips)
- Baby Wipes – Huggies Simply Clean Fragrance-Free Baby Wipes (Unscented), 2 qty
- Sketchbook and drawing materials (Pencils, pen, eraser, etc.)
- Personal apron/work clothes
YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
Jun Lee is a printmaker who works in large format woodcut utilizing animals as metaphors to convey competition in our daily lives. Lee is a DC Art Bank Grant recipient from 2019–2022, awarded by the Government of DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She was the Printmaking Artist in Residence at the Lee Arts Center (VA, 2014–2021), Montgomery College Takoma Park/Silver Spring (MD, 2018), the winter resident at Penland School of Crafts (NC, 2017–2020), and the Denbo Fellow at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (MD, 2017). Lee attended the Minneapolis College of Art & Design where she earned a BFA in Illustration in 2002, and a Post Baccalaureate in Printmaking in 2004. In 2007, She received her MFA in Print Media from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Lee’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and she has taught printmaking classes at multiple locations.
