About this Workshop:

Paste-papers are one of the oldest techniques for making decorative papers used in bookbinding and the long-stitch technique is used for binding the sections (signatures) of a book together without glue. In this two-day workshop we will explore an updated contemporary take on these two traditional bookbinding techniques. On day one we will experiment with different ways to make paste-papers and then on day two we will use our handmade papers to create the covers for the long-stitch books. You will come away from the workshop with your own unique artist’s book and the knowledge to continue making them on your own.

Level: Intermediate – Introduction to Bookmaking or similar experience with bookbinding techniques (6 hours) is recommended, but not required.

Registration closes May 24, 2024. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may/will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Anne Barnes is an artist and graphic designer living in Washington, DC. She graduated in June 2020 with an MFA in Visual Arts and worked for many years as a book and cover designer in publishing. Her mixed media work—which includes the use of books as medium and the production of artist’s books—combines a high-keyed color palette, expressive gesture, and symbolic mark-making. The result is the abstracted visualizations of her memories, emotions, and varied perspectives that merge to become metaphors for exploration into themes of human nature, popular culture, feminism, and motherhood. Learn more about her work at www.annebarnesstudio.com and on Instagram @annebarnes_studio.
