About this Workshop:
If you like using photographic material in your artwork this class provides innovative ways to incorporate them in a variety of ways. Image transfers are a valuable resource for integrating representative imagery in an artistic way, and altered photos can be mixed media gems in themselves. Mixing and matching techniques makes it all the more fun! Topics include: Different types of image transfers; Materials for making transfers; How to use transfers in mixed media work; Methods for altering and using photographic materials.
Level: All levels welcome – no experience necessary.
Registration closes November 21, 2023. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may/will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:
Registration includes a $20 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including the instructor’s kit of paper and collage materials, acrylic paint, and other texturing tools and materials. Students will need to supply additional materials of their own, including:
- 6-10 photos, black & white and/or color, any size (i.e., old fashioned Kodak photos—old vacation photos, etc.—but not precious!)
- 6-12 laser copies of favorite images (i.e. “Xerox” or commercial, not inkjet), black & white and/or color copies
- Pad of 8”x 10” or larger cold press watercolor paper (example)
- 1 Chartpak Ad Marker Colorless Blender Pen
- 1 roll of clear packaging tape
- Assortment of inexpensive acrylic paints if you want specific colors (we’ll have an assortment in class)
- (optional) Any personal tools you’d like to use instead of Pyramid’s class sets: scissors, X-acto knife, pencil, colored pencils, inexpensive acrylic paint brushes (assorted sizes), decorative hole punches, etc.
- (optional) Any personal materials you’d like to incorporate in your work: stamps, dye ink pads, stencils, other texturing tools and materials, oil pastels, found papers, etc.
YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
Sharon Robinson is a mixed media artist specializing in abstract collage and assemblage and currently resides in the Washington, DC area. Raised in New Jersey, she earned a master’s degree in urban design and community development from MIT, and worked in the and urban transit and planning field for over 20 years in Los Angeles and Portland, OR. Since 1999 she has been a full-time artist, muralist, teacher, and arts program contractor. As an artist she exhibits in the DC region, as well as other east and west coast cities. Sharon teaches mixed media and collage classes in the Smithsonian Associates Studio Arts Program, The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA and Montpelier Art Center in Maryland. She also provides administrative support for public art projects conducted by the Prince George’s County Arts & Cultural Heritage Division. Her community activities include serving on the national Board of Directors of SCRAP, a network of non-profit creative re-use centers; participating as a review panelist for DC Arts Commission and Maryland State Arts Council grants, and as an appointee to the Arts Commission of the City of Mt.
