Summer 2023

Residency dates: May 10-August 18, 2023
Application Deadline: February 17, 2023
Notification: March 17, 2023

Created in honor of artist Gregory Vita, this artist residency offers a competitive opportunity for emerging and seasoned artists alike who hope to gain more knowledge, improve their skills, and explore new techniques in papermaking. Two artists are selected a year by the Pyramid Atlantic artistic staff. Residents work in a productive community atmosphere alongside other artists and are expected to abide by all studio policies. Housing is not provided, although, upon acceptance, artists will receive information on opportunities of nearby housing.

Selection Process: A panel, including members of the Vita family, artists, and arts administrators will jury each round of applications.

Selected Artists Receive:

  • A three month residency in Pyramid Atlantic’s paper studio
  • Key to studios and 24 hour access
  • Two papermaking workshops (from our seasonal workshop line-up)
  • Three (4 hour) lessons in other studios with Pyramid Atlantic’s artistic associates
  • Storage space and flat file for tools and materials
  • Use of standard shop supplies

Eligibility:

Each applicant will be judged on the artistic merit of their work, interest, and potential in paper arts. Artists whose work includes papermaking, paper sculpture, paper marbling, book arts, printmaking, (or any combination thereof), are encouraged to apply.

Current Pyramid Atlantic Board members, staff, and artistic associates are not eligible for the Denbo Fellowship.

About Gregory Vita:

Gregory Vita (1990–2017) was a dedicated, perseverant, and talented papermaker, bookmaker and printmaker. Born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Corcoran School of Art & Design in Washington D.C. in 2015. Athletic and multi-talented, he enjoyed surfing, skateboarding, and music, which inspired his true passion—art. During his time with Pyramid, he wore many hats: a resident artist, a teacher, our resident skateboarder, and a friend you could share your wildest art ideas with. Thanks to the generosity of Greg’s family and friends, we are proud to offer this artist residency opportunity in his honor.
