About this Workshop:

Monotype and Collage

Looking for ways to explore printmaking beyond the singular page or edition? This hands-on course will teach you the basics of color monoprinting and unique methods for collage. While creating our mixed-media prints we will consider approaches to mark-making, composition, and color. You will leave class with a small series of unique prints.

Level: Beginner – no previous experience necessary

Registration extended to September 18, 2023. Material fees are included with your registration, though a list of additional items needed to be gathered/purchased will be sent with your confirmation.

Registration includes a $43 materials fee to cover consumables like paper, printing plates, and ink. Students will need to supply additional materials of their own, including:

  • Any old prints and drawings on paper to play with
  • A variety of textured items such as lace, string, fruit and vegetable ‘netting’ bags, thread and other materials you’d like to experiment with for collage and texture
  • Any decorative papers you might have for collaging, including Chine collé Japanese papers, Korean papers, book pages, etc.
  • (optional) Personal Xacto knife and/or scissors (we’ll have extras)
  • (optional) Any additional Printmaking paper you might have, such as Rives BFK or Somerset
  • (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras in-studio)
  • Sketchbook/notepad and pencil for sketching and/or taking notes


Kim Bursic is a painter, printmaker, and collage artist. She studied at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she received a BFA in printmaking and book arts. She relocated west to Washington State University to complete my MFA, focusing on printmaking, monotype and large format book structures. Her time and travels in Washington and the Pacific Northwest ignited her interest in landscape as a visual language. After graduate school, she worked on the Umatilla Indian Reservation at Crow’s Shadow Institute, a non-profit printmaking and art studio. Then she was offered a position at Tyler Graphics in NY as an etching printer. There she learned how to make fine art prints for artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Stella, Al Held, and John Walker. After working many years as a professional printer, she found painting to be a good fit for her personal and artistic needs. She regularly incorporates both into her works on paper.
