About this Workshop:

This workshop will introduce you to the basics of traditional paper marbling, including both combed and stone patterns. The history of marbling will be discussed, along with how to make tools and the materials needed for marbling on your own.  In addition to marbling sheets of paper, you will have the opportunity to experiment with marbling on other surfaces, such as wood, leather, and fabric.

Level: Beginner – no previous experience necessary

Registration closes October 28, 2023. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

Registration includes a $45 materials fee to cover all materials, which will be provided in class. Students may want to consider a few optional supplies, including:

  • Personal apron (waterproof is recommended, but a sturdy kitchen apron will do)
  • Sturdy shoes with good tread—the studio floor can get a bit slippery when wet. Comfortable shoes are key though, as you’ll be on your feet most of the day.
  • Any personal papers and/or other substrates to experiment on (details will be provided at registration)

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Sarah Noreen is an artist and educator based in the Washington D.C. area. She holds a MFA in printmaking as well as a MA in Art Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Primarily working in printmaking and book and paper arts, Sarah’s work is inspired by her multicultural upbringing in Thailand, Saudi Arabia and small town Montana. She currently works as a hand bookbinder at the Government Publishing Office.
