What is an artist book? How should you approach the bookbinding and production process? How do I gather ideas and content for an artist book? In this multi-week workshop, participants will explore the timeless medium of bookmaking while including the painterly and graphic printmaking process of screenprinting. We will look closely at the relationships between form, material, and content and create meaningful conversations around book objects. Participants will learn a variety of adaptable book structures, experiment with sequential and non-traditional book formats, and create a fully realized artist book. This is a fully experimental workshop where students will explore their ideas, engage in playful printmaking, and utilize their bookbinding and screenprinting skills to create an artist book.
Level: Intermediate – Introduction to Bookmaking and Introduction to Screenprinting or similar experience in both disciplines (at least 6 hours in each) is required.
Registration extended to November 1, 2023. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.
Registration includes a $40 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including community inks, newsprint, and bookbinding tools. Students will need to gather/purchase additional materials of their own, including:
