This internship is a partnership between the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission – Prince George’s County Department of Parks & Recreation (M-NCPPC) and the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center.

OBJECTIVE

Student artist interns, ages 14-19, will learn the process of silk screen printmaking from idea and design development through production and final printed product of 20-25, hand-pulled prints. Students will receive hands-on printing experience and artist lectures. The final image will be scanned/photographed for M-NCPPC to produce the large-scale print run of rolled posters for distribution to the public.

QUALIFICATIONS

This Summer internship is open to all student artists, ages 14 through 19, that attend High School or reside in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Rising ninth graders are eligible and invited to apply.

Participating students will be led by a professional teaching artist in the collaborative design of the 2023 Hispanic Heritage Poster for the M-NCPPC. All necessary art supplies will be provided.

Prospective student interns should have a passion for the visual arts and Hispanic Heritage culture. This internship is open to all students, of any ethnicity or background.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

The internship will take place starting on Monday, June 26, 2023, at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, 4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville, MD 20781. Internship days will be Mondays through Thursdays lasting from June 26 to July 20, 2023. The week of July 4th will be an exception, meetings will be on July 3rd and 5th-7th of that week. The internship hours will be from 10 am to 2 pm each day.

Each participating student artist will receive monetary compensation of up to $500.00, based on attendance and successful completion of the internship.

Transportation to Pyramid Atlantic Art Center and daily lunch will be the responsibility of the student artist.

Participation in this internship will allow student artists to have a hands-on experience with printmaking processes. Students should be willing to get their hands dirty with printing inks and other materials and should consider the nature of this type of art if there is any sensitivity or allergy to project art materials.

Cell phone use will be limited during the time of the internship due to the art-making processes with which the student artists will be engaged. In addition, student artists will be asked to not share any details about the art ideas for the poster’s development. The poster will be formally unveiled in September 2023 for the start of Hispanic Heritage Month; therefore, student artists will be asked to preserve the surprise for the community.

Upon acceptance, student artists will be asked to review and sign Pyramid Atlantic’s code of conduct before starting this internship. Student artists will also be expected to follow any COVID-19 regulations per Pyramid Atlantic Art Center’s policy, including but not limited to maintaining appropriate social distancing and wearing a face mask.
