Black Ink

February 24 @ 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm

RSVP

Please join us for an afternoon open house showcasing local Black artists and creatives, particularly printmakers, through art demonstrations, a pop-up market, and open studios. Free and open to everyone. RSVP required. We request that you select your approximate arrival time so that we can plan for flow; you may stay as long as you like.

Agenda:

  • 12 – 4 pm – Artist studios open for visitors (details TBA)
  • 12 – 6 pm – Pop-Up Market curated by Nubian Hueman.
  • 12 – 4 pm – Printmaking Demonstrations in Letterpress, Relief, and Screenprint featuring Sarah Matthews, Korey Richardson, Jeanette M. Bolden, and Stephen Wiggins.
  • 4 – 5 pm Artist Conversation, “Paravisions: Sketching an Alternate Art(World)” by Imar HutchinsZoma Wallace and Matthew Gordon. Using our panelists’ recent project honoring the Windrush Generation in Birmingham, UK, as a point of entry, we consider questions such as: Is Art (as we experience it today) exclusively the province of the wealthy? Is it a status symbol? A commodity to be hoarded and flipped? Is Art trapped in a space of monetary concern, or does it still have room to move as a vehicle for something else? How should we (can we) consider work by Black artists, as we deal with the current “mainstream” fascination with it? And how should we (can we) protect it? … Our panel seeks to question the ways that Art can be experienced, presented, collected, utilized and/or understood. (Kindly note that seating for this portion of the event is limited and not guaranteed by RSVP).
  • 4 – 6 pm – Happy Hour Mocktail Social
