ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Between Two Fires

In the Helen C. Frederick Gallery
July 8, 2023 – August 13, 2023

This exhibition features large-scale cyanotypes, an immersive installation, and exquisite papermaking and printmaking. Drummond is the go-to expert in the paper “blow out” technique, which uses stencils and pulp to create patterning.

Materiality is central to Drummond’s work. She examines clothing as material culture, extracting tacit narratives from garments and the bodies that wear them. In Between Two Fires, her layered prints explore delicate fabrics and their ability to ensnare the viewer and the wearer.

“Cloth receives us, holding not just our histories but also those of people who wore the garments before us. Becoming a second skin it denotes on its surface the experiences and encounters we have with the exterior world. In this way clothing can also store cultural and historical narratives of groups of people.” – Sue Carrie Drummond
