The Kreeger Museum and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center are pleased to present Echo/Location: Exploring the Extra Sensory, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Imar Lyman, on view at The Kreeger Museum from April 17 through July 11, 2026.
Echolocation is a form of biological sonic radar. Used as a tool for some animals to “see” and navigate their environments, sound waves are emitted to avoid prey and find their way in the dark.
Echo/Location showcases DC-based artist Imar Lyman’s [Hutchins] (b. 1970) new body of abstract work. Bringing together mixed media collage, painting, sculpture and printmaking, his artistry is in conversation with artists Sam Gilliam and Frank Stella, masterworks that have anchored The Kreeger Museum’s Contemporary Gallery since 1994 when the Museum opened to
the public.
Imar Lyman’s debut exhibition at the museum utilizes “echoes” from the past to navigate the current moment and propel different points of view forward. Several pieces featured invite participation, asking the viewer to consider how the artwork is presented or to explore its form and function—things which may not always appear immediately obvious. Constantly pushing boundaries, he also pays homage to overlooked aspects of printmaking traditions. The culmination
becomes an energetic loop of color, patterns, and materiality that blend time and our place within it.

About The Kreeger Museum
One of the greatest legacies of David and Carmen Kreeger is the Museum that bears their name. In 1959, the Kreegers began to amass a formidable collection of modern art. For the next fifteen years they assembled most of the Museum’s holdings. The collection reflects the spirit of David and Carmen Kreeger who agreed on every piece they purchased. Their approach to collecting was a personal one–they bought what they loved. The Kreeger’s focus on 19th and 20th century paintings is evidenced by works by Monet, Picasso, Braque, Stella, Mitchell, and Frankenthaler, among others. Also included in the permanent collection are works by prominent Washington artists, including William Christenberry, Gene Davis, Sam Gilliam, Simmie Knox, and Paul Reed. Outstanding examples of African and Asian art are integrated in gallery spaces on both levels. Designed in 1963 by Philip Johnson and Richard Foster, the building sits on five acres and is surrounded by gardens and terraces filled with sculpture.
