Four collaborative prints by Jessica Sabogal and Shanna Strauss are the intersection points of “SANA(A),” their show at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. But even when the two California artists work separately, their work is linked by shared outlooks and comparably impressive skills.

The Colombian American Sabogal and the Tanzanian American Strauss, life partners as well as printmaking colleagues, worked at Pyramid Atlantic in August as part of the recently reinvigorated Denbo Publishing Residency. The resulting exhibition contains 19 prints, made with a variety of processes, that principally portray women, whether specific or symbolic. The title “SANA(A)” melds words from the artists’ respective backgrounds: “Sana” is Spanish for “heal” and “Sanaa” is “art” in Swahili.

The dual-artist prints combine photographs of their subjects with hand-rendered elements. “The Defender,” which a gallery note describes as a portrait of “Malaya Tuyay, a Filipinx artist, activist and community organizer,” places her in front of drawn decorative motifs printed in gold and aqua, some of which surround her head like a halo. In another of the duo’s collaborations, a photo-derived woman holds a drawing of a snake covered in intricate markings, some of which are accented with gold leaf, a Strauss trademark.

Sabogal uses photographs in silk-screens of young women identified as “Chicanx,” but the collaged photos serve as backdrops to the lone central figures, which are presented in a bold, colorful, graphic-novel style. The artist also incorporates text into some of her portraits, giving them immediacy and a poster-like feel.

Strauss offers prints in two styles. Her linoleum-block and chine collé efforts are elegantly detailed and include such metaphorical images as a beehive, a raptor and a heart in the process of being repaired with needle and thread. Her “Kanga” screen prints distill women to black-on-black shapes defined by wraps of brightly patterned African fabric, their featureless faces suggested by barely discernible touches such as a protruding eyelash.
