About this Workshop

Are you interested in making paper at home with materials you might already have? Then you should join us for an evening Tin Can Papermaking, where you’ll learn how to make cute circular sheets that can be used for coasters, ornaments, garlands, and more.

Level: Beginner – no experience necessary!

Registration extended until March 12, 2022. With your registration you’ll receive the full materials list (with helpful links) to purchase your items, any helpful handouts about the process, as well as a quick 1-page “how-to” on downloading and using the Zoom video app.

 

Please Note: The online session will be recorded for Pyramid Atlantic’s private use to better optimize our programming and share as examples for funders. You may mute your microphone or turn off your camera if you do not wish to be recorded. Access to the recording(s) will be made available to all participants for a limited time.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

At registration, students will receive the full materials list (with any helpful links) to purchase supplies. The list includes:

  • Two tin cans with a diameter of about 6 inches.The important part is that both cans are the same size
  • Half inch wire mesh (slightly larger than the mouth of the cans), such as hardware cloth or Amaco Wireform Mesh
  • About a square foot of window screen
  • A can opener
  • A pair of wire cutters
  • An old blender or immersion blender
  • Two plastic cups
  • A sponge
  • An assortment of paper material: different colored recycled or construction paper, or substitute magazine pages, office paper, tissue paper to recycle into new sheets of paper, 2-5 pieces (roughly 8 1/2″ x 11″ each)
  • A window, or piece of plexiglass
  • A roll of paper towels

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Marta Perez Garcia was born and grew up in Puerto Rico. She has an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and has lived in Washington, DC for more than 10 years. Marta mainly works in printmaking, but also works in drawing, painting, and installations. Her pieces have been exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States and Puerto Rico, and she’s received numerous grants and awards. Marta is deeply involved with the arts and their propagation in the communities of the District through the teaching and direction of public art projects.
