About this Workshop:
In this one-day workshop, students will play and experiment in screenprinting with a unique and accessible application method using a common household item: tin cans. To do this, students will learn how to make their own tin can screen and learn techniques to drag the make-shift screen across the substrate. Utilizing our tin can screens, we can create free-flowing, abstract images on large pieces of fabric yardage. We will also discuss concepts of loose pattern making, utilizing color theory, and layering transparent ink colors to create depth.
Students will leave with a variety of large and small pieces of printed fabrics to take home with them.
Level: Beginner – no previous experience required
Registration closes November 24, 2024. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:
Registration includes a $30 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including ink. Students will need to supply additional materials of their own, including:
- (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) or wear clothing that can get inky
- 1-2 yards of cotton fabric or muslin
- Tin cans or plastic bottles
- Design ideas and pattern inspiration
- (optional) A notebook/sketchbook to work out ideas and/or take notes
YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
Eliza Clifford is an arts educator, printmaker, and multidisciplinary artist from Maryland. Her work explores ideas of womanhood, mental health, gender, and how identities are constructed (and destructed) in modern day society. As a multidisciplinary artist, she experiments in a variety of mediums, including printmaking, book arts, design, alternative photography, natural dyeing, and quilting/sewing. Clifford has worked and taught at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, the Women’s Studio Workshop, the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, Arts on the Block, and the Metropolitan Center for Visual Art (VisArts). She has been an artist in residence at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, the Remarque Print Workshop, and the Penland School of Craft. Clifford has been featured in exhibitions at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, the Washington Printmakers Gallery, the Baltimore Fine Print Fair, the Morgan Conservatory, the Torpedo Factory Art Center, and Kent State University.
