The benefits of keeping a daily sketchbook are numerous. It’s a safe, personal space in which to collect and express observations and ideas; experiment with new processes and materials; relax and practice mindfulness even as you practice improving your skills. Join us for a special evening with visiting artist Carlos Hernandez as we delve into a world of mixed media collage sketchbooks. You’ll learn how Carlos approaches this daily habit, incorporating various collage elements in unpredictable combinations to produce new and unexpected discoveries. Then, with his displayed work on the gallery walls to serve as inspiration, it will be your turn to get hands on and play within your own sketchbook!
Level: All levels welcome – no previous experience with drawing or collage is necessary.
Registration closes October 10, 2024. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may want to gather additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

The work of Houston-based serigraphy artist Carlos Hernandez has been showcased through a variety of gallery shows and projects that include the music industry, restaurant and retail design, and corporate work. Carlos is a founding partner of Burning Bones Press, a full-service printmaking studio located in the Houston Heights and has served as an instructor of Screen Printing at Rice University, Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts.
Career highlights include serving as the 2019 Artist-In-Residence at the renowned Hatch Show Print, which culminated in a show at the Haley Gallery; becoming a part of the print collection at The Smithsonian Institute and the Library of Congress; being tapped as the official commemorative poster artist for the Austin City Limits Music Festival; and his work with childhood idol and hot rod legend, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth.
