About this Workshop:

During this 4-day workshop students will be introduced to the exciting and inky world of letterpress! Students will experience the art of letterpress printing, including how historical equipment is now used to make modern creations, like persuasive posters, art prints, cards, and even zines. They’ll explore the differences between cylinder and platen presses, set a variety of type, and mix ink. Students will then have a chance to further explore the relationships between form, image, and content as they carve their own small image design and learn about simple book forms, and how each element can add to their creative expression. 

At the end of the workshop, students will leave with a number of new prints and ideas, as well as a basic understanding of how to properly use the equipment and operate in a functioning community print studio. For those who might be interested in using the studio independently beyond class, information on how to become certified will be provided.

Registration extended to March 25, 2026 and includes all necessary materials. Students are responsible for providing their own lunch. Additional details and options will be provided at registration.

 

Please Note:  This is a skills building class with each day building on what was learned the day before. Our class capacity is limited to ensure everyone has ample one-on-one time with the instructor. Please be sure you can commit to the full 4-day workshop before signing up. CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

We’re providing everything you need for class, including paper, cardstock, and ink. You may want to consider bringing the following items:

  • (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) and/or wear clothes that can get inky
  • (optional) Any additional paper or prints you might have that you’d like to upcycle – maps, sheet music, and more make great backdrops for prints!
  • (optional) Notepad, sketchbook, and any other favorite writing/drawing tools for developing your ideas or taking notes

 

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Lauren Emeritz loves letters but not spelling. When she found out graphic design existed she signed right up! After loving that for a while, she wanted to get off the computer and get her hands dirty. Letterpress combines all her favorite things: type (especially wood type), paper, ink, creativity / problem-solving and making things by hand. Thanks to a Community Investment Grant from the Office of the County Executive, Prince George’s County, students living or attending school in Prince George’s County qualify for a significantly discounted tuition of $25. Proof of residency or enrollment will be required after registration.
