Sunday, October 2, 12pm-6pm
This workshop is inspired by the Dutch artist W.H. Werkman, who used letters as forms and played around with them to make art! Using the same methods, we will be applying the ink by hand and use the type upside down, like stamps. No time will be lost worrying about the “technical” side of letterpress, but we’ll work organically and focus instead on the shapes you want to create and the colors you want to use.
The day will start with an introduction of Werkman and his life and work, and then swiftly dive into making art! The first part of the day we’ll use the wood type as shapes to create colorful images on paper. After a break we will then use stencils and brayers to work even more free form.
Whilst making your art, you will learn about the presses at Pyramid Atlantic and how to operate them. At the end of the day you will go home with your own truly unique work!

Elisabeth Boerwinkel is a printmaker and illustrator from the Netherlands, currently living and working in Washington, DC. She was most recently a Keyholder Resident for Fall/Winter 2021. Pulling her first prints in 2015 she fell in love with copperplate etching straight away. Later she wandered into a letterpress studio in Amsterdam and got obsessed with wood, metal, and heavy machinery. You can find her in the letterpress studio smelling the ink. Her work can be viewed @elisabeth_kunegonde on Instagram.
“All the colors and blocks were already set out, so we could get right to work. There were examples hanging up and a book to use for reference. There was a ton of positive energy during the workshop. SO MUCH FUN!!!!! It was pretty perfect.”
