About this Workshop:

This 4-day workshop will cover the essentials of relief printmaking with multiple blocks, effectively layering multiple colors. Learn how to transfer images to your blocks, explore carving techniques, and experiment with color mixing and layering. You’ll also gain hands-on experience with registration techniques using a press and practical tips for creating consistent editions. Whether you’re new to printmaking or looking to expand your skills, this workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to creating vibrant, multicolor prints.

  • Day 1: Overview, Demo, Design and begin carving 
  • Day 2: Registration overview, Print color 1, continue carving 
  • Day 3: Print color 2, continue carving 
  • Day 4: Print colour 3, editioning overview 

Level: Intermediate/Advanced – Introduction to Relief Printmaking (linoleum or wood) or similar press printing experience (6 hours) is required. 

Registration closes September 18, 2025. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may/will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

Registration includes a $55 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including three 8”x10” linoleum blocks, ink, printmaking paper, and newsprint. Students will need to supply additional materials of their own, including:

  • (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) or wear clothes that can get a bit inky
  • (optional) Notebooks/sketchbook (if you want to take notes)
  • An idea/sketch for your design. The supplied blocks are 8”x10”, so any dimension up to that size is up to you. Your instructor will provide more details on how to develop your layers.
  • Personal set of relief cutting tools – can be anything from a beginners set on up

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Gloria Ann Shows is a Filipino-American artist specializing in printmaking, fiber art, and book art. Her work has been featured in museums and galleries nationwide, including the Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art (OH), Turner Center for the Arts (GA), Davis Fine Arts Gallery (WV), the University of North Florida’s Gallery of Art, and Ruddell Gallery at Black Hills State University (SD). She has received grants from the Ohio Arts Council, The Ohio State University, and the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, and her awards include the Best in Traditional Techniques Award from the Oklahoma Printmaking Network and the Curator’s Choice Award at the Collect:Connect Exhibition. Shows is a member of Southern Graphics Council International and Mid America Print Council. She earned her BFA in Printmaking from the University of Central Oklahoma and her MFA from The Ohio State University. Learn more about her work by following her on Instagram @gloriashowsart.
