About this Workshop:

Learn how to embellish your own handmade paper using custom stencils and pulp paint! Prior to the workshop, participants create their own custom stencil out of craft foam (optional) or they can use premade stencils provided during the workshop. Participants will get a brief overview of how to form a sheet of paper, then experiment with applying their stencil and using pulp paint to make a colorful design.

Level: Beginner – no experience necessary!

Registration extended to April 10, 2026 and all materials are provided.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

Registration includes all materials—just come ready to have fun! In addition, you may want to bring the following optional items for class:

  • Sturdy shoes with good traction – the studio floor can be slick in spots when wet
  • (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras though)—waterproof recommended, but a heavy kitchen apron will work too
  • (optional) Craft foam to create your own custom stencils ahead of class (example – available at most craft stores) or any pre-fab stencils you have in your collection you’d like to use
  • (optional) Notepad and pencil to take any notes

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

David Joo is a papermaker and artist focused in finding new expression in paper’s tactile and sensuous details. His work stems from paying close attention to both how paper is made and put to use in art and in the broader culture, ranging from the material foundations of visual culture to paper’s role in transmitting information. His designs and sculptural paper works have been shown in galleries, resorts, and virtual spaces after his practice first emerged amid the pandemic.
