About this Workshop:

Put on an apron and prepare for a fun evening learning letterpress! Make+Takes are the perfect way to try letterpress before jumping into a full-length workshop. During this session, we’ll guide you through the process of simple typesetting and printing your own coasters using a prepared phrase, and then one of your own! Everyone will have a chance to print their own small edition of coasters.

Level: All levels are welcome—no experience necessary

Registration extended to November 15, 2025 and all materials are included.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

Registration includes all necessary materials – just come ready to have fun! Students may want to bring the following items:

  • (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) or wear clothes that can get inky
  • (optional) Pencil and paper (if you want to take notes)
  • (optional) A few ideas for your personal coaster set – a simple word, initials, or acronym, is ideal

Note: For your safety we also recommend short sleeves only, close-toed shoes, and that long hair be tied back.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Jim Modrick has been active in the letterpress studio for over four years and is an ArtGym member at Pyramid Atlantic. He can also be found in the screenprinting studio as he continues reconnecting with ink on paper. Jim also engages his creative side through drawing and, most recently, in oil painting. As an arts administrator, Jim built a career that combined organizational management with a passion for learning. He explored the role of the arts in education focusing on creativity, leadership, and accessibility. These days he works as a Grants Management Specialist with the National Park Service and, for the past 20 years, Jim has called the Aspen Hill area of Montgomery County home. Follow Jim’s work on Instagram @jemodrick.

“Any ink color was available, and the wood type was already set out since the class time was short. I loved the whole class.”
