About this Workshop:

Learn the basics of the lithography process using paper and polyester plates to create multiples from both hand drawn and laser/photocopy images. Create your own dynamic prints utilizing this non-toxic and chemistry-free process!

Level: Beginner—no previous experience required.

Registration closes May 15, 2026. Material fees are included with your registration to cover all of the necessary supplies. Students may want to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

Registration includes a $25 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including pronto plates, printmaking paper, litho crayons, adhesive, and miscellaneous collage materials. Students may want to also consider bringing the following supplies to class:

  • (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras) and/or wear clothes that can get messy
  • (optional) Any specialty printmaking papers you might want to try printing on
  • (optional) Any personal markers, watercolors, stamps, and collage elements you may want to consider using to enhance your prints
  • (optional) Notebook and pen to take notes
  • For Day 2: Laser or photocopier images (not inkjet) of sketches/drawings and/or photographs that will fit a 9×12 inch plat. More details will be provided on Day 1.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Dr. Pamela Harris Lawton, Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair in Art Education and thought leader for the Hurwitz Center at the Maryland Institute College of Art, is a fifth-generation Washingtonian, educator, and product of DC public schools. Lawton was introduced to printmaking as a participant in Discover Graphics, a professional printmaking program housed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She holds a BA degree in Studio Art and Sociology, an MFA in Printmaking, and an EdDCTA in art education. For the past 25 years she has taught art/art education at the college level and served as Director of Education Studies at the former Corcoran College of Art + Design. Honors include NAEA Distinguished Fellow, NAEA Higher Education Art Educator of the Year (2025), J. Eugene Grigsby Award (COMC/NAEA), Pearl Greenberg Award for Teaching and Research in Art Education, Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the University of Edinburgh-UK, and Associate Artist at the Tate Exchange in London.
