Sundays, August 17 and 24, 10:30 am–4:30 pm
Woodcut is considered to be one of the earliest of all printmaking methods. This 2-day introductory workshop will offer a chance to deep dive into the basic techniques and tips you’ll need to get started in this addictive medium. You’ll learn about selecting and preparing your wood, using the carving tools and keeping them well maintained, as well as carving techniques and tips. Students are encouraged to design their own image up to 12”x10” before the workshop.
On day 2 we’ll learn about the art of inking and printing the wood blocks. Students will then pull a small edition of black and white proof prints using Pyramid’s American French Tool press.
Level: Beginner – Previous experience with relief printmaking (linoleum, wood) is welcome, but not required.
Registration closes August 10, 2025. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may/will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.
Registration includes a $50 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including an 12”x10” wood block, paper, newsprint, ink, and access to carving tools and sharpeners. Students will need to supply additional materials of their own, including:
Carlos Doria is a printmaker and designer based in Washington, DC. He works primarily in lithography and mokuhanga. A native of Argentina, he received his BFA at Brooklyn College and his MFA in set and film design at Tisch School for the Arts at NYU. He has participated in several residencies in Japan, where he studied mokuhanga, as well as workshops at various printmaking studios in the US and Europe.
