About this Workshop:
Learn to create beautifully patterned, one-of-a-kind tea towels and t-shirts by using the Shibori Indigo method of dyeing fabric. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the basics of various folding and binding techniques to create beautiful patterns on fabric.
Level: Beginner – no previous experience necessary
Registration closes July 26, 2024. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may/will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:
Registration includes a $15 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including indigo dye, soda ash, pvc pipe, twine, and bags for transporting dyed pieces. Students should also gather/purchase the following items for class:
- Personal apron (we’ll have extras). Students are encouraged to wear black clothing/clothes you don’t mind staining with indigo dye
- Notepad and pen for taking notes
- At least 20 pieces of 100% cotton or linen fabric. Picking up a few yards of cotton muslin from a fabric store is the most economical choice. You can also bring t-shirts too.
- A pair of long gloves (example)
- 1-2 clear trash bags to take your items home to wash after class
YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
Sarah Matthews is a 2016 MA Art & the Book graduate from the Corcoran College of Arts and Design, and holds an MBA with a Marketing Concentration and BS in Sociology from Bowie State University. Matthews’ work has been exhibited nationally and is part of the permanent collections of Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, GWU’s Gelman Library, University of Puget Sound, and Samford University.
