About this Workshop:

Do you like making custom holiday cards? Are you interested in learning how to letterpress? Pyramid Atlantic has a workshop for you. Join us for a three-week intensive where you’ll learn and design custom cards for the upcoming holiday season.

Over three sessions, participants will create a series of custom cards while learning to set type and work a letterpress. Each student will walk away with a portfolio of cards for the upcoming holidays. Note: Please register by selecting your preferred print session for Day 3.

Class Schedule:

  • Week 1: Typographic Messages – The first week we’ll focus on learning to work the machinery.  During this session, students will learn to set metal type to create holiday cards with simple phrases.
  • Week 2: Woodtype Greetings – In week 2, it’s all about woodtype! Students will set type designs using Pyramid’s woodtype collection. Expect to make two types of cards in this session.
  • Week 3: Two-color cards – In the final session, students will use what they’ve learned to create a custom card that requires two colors for printing. Note: Please register by selecting your preferred print session for Day 3.

Level: Beginner—No previous letterpress experience necessary

Registration closes October 26, 2024. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:

Registration includes a $25 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including paper, envelopes, and ink. Students may want to bring the following optional items to class:

  • Personal apron (we’ll have extras) or wear clothes that can get inky
  • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes – you’ll be on your feet for most of the day
  • Notebook or sketchbook to jot down ideas and take notes
  • Ideas for simple words and phrases you might like to see on a card
  • Any personal decorative paper you’d like to try printing on (marbled, heavy craft paper, watercolor paper, etc)

Note: For your safety we also recommend short sleeves only and that long hair be tied back.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Sara Blumberg loves creating designs through all aspects of letterpress printing. She fell in love with the art after taking an introductory printing class at Pyramid two years ago. During the day Sara works as a design and content strategist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. focusing on ocean missions. Most evenings you can find her making new designs or trying new color combinations in the studio. Before letterpress, Sara worked as a journalist in Baltimore.
