About this Workshop:
Drawing is fundamental to the art making process. Whether it’s a quick sketch to tease out ideas, a study to be translated into another medium, or a work of art in its own right, drawing can help us understand ourselves and the unique way in which we see the world. The goal of this workshop is to use drawing as a means of self-expression. While the principles of drawing will guide our journey, we will use exercises and prompts to extend our ways of seeing and working. As we experiment with line, mark-making and composition, you will be encouraged to go beyond what is visible and wade into the unknown. We will work with water-soluble graphite, a versatile tool that allows for soft washes, bold inky marks and everything in between.
Level: All levels welcome.

With your registration you’ll receive the full materials list (with helpful links) to purchase your items, any helpful handouts about the process, as well as a quick 1-page “how-to” on downloading and using the Zoom video app.

Class Materials List:
At registration, students will receive the full materials list (with any helpful links) to purchase supplies. The list includes:
- Canson Mixed Media Drawing Paper 18×24” 160 gsm or equivalent
- Lyra Watersoluble graphite – at least one each of 2B, 6B and 9B
- Drawing Board 20”x26” (x2) (example; can substitute sturdy cardboard)
- Paintbrushes of different sizes, shape and material
- Rags
- Eraser
- Large and small sponge
- Spray bottle (water)
- Container (for water)
- Easel
Your Instructor:
Contemporary artist Priya Vadhyar‘s paintings manifest the meeting of the particular and the universal, knowing and not-knowing, thinking and no mind. Her work embodies the interplay of spontaneity and restraint, the discovery of unexpected visions, contradictions and many horizons which reveal unity amidst the illusion of boundaries and multiplicity. Priya’s work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Seacourt Print Workshop (Bangor, Ireland), Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (Hyattsville, MD), BlackRock Center for the Arts (Germantown, MD), Carroll Community College (Westminster, MD) and The Drawing Studio (Tucson, AZ).
