About this Workshop:

Join us for a knowledge-sharing and skill-building club in copper plate printmaking! Participants will work together alongside an instructor to build a thorough understanding of basic printmaking concepts, and a solid set of foundational skills. Students can build upon these skills through individual exploration, or by taking any of the more advanced printmaking workshops that Pyramid has to offer.

Etching Club will meet for 7 weeks. Each session will have a one-hour etching technique demonstration, followed by two hours of an open studio in which the instructor will be available for questions. It’s not mandatory to attend every meeting or participate in every demo, but your presence and experience is always welcome and invited! Our 7 weeks cycle will culminate in a club portfolio exchange, where we will have an opportunity to share our work and what we learned with one another.

The club schedule is as follows:

  • Week 1: Introduction, plate preparation, drypoint
  • Week 2: Inking, wiping & printing techniques, setting up the press
  • Week 3: Basic wet media: Line etching & acid safety
  • Week 4: Aquatint, technique 1
  • Week 5: Aquatint, technique 2
  • Week 6: Creative resist methods
  • Week 7: Open Printing session and portfolio exchange

Level: All levels welcome – this club is open to all printmaking experience levels, whether you are an advanced printmaker with knowledge to share, or just starting to learn a new skill!

Registration closes April 23, 2023. Materials fees are included with registration to cover consumable materials provided in class. Students will also need to supply additional items of their own—please see the class materials list below for information.

“I really enjoyed the long term, reoccurring format of this class to get to dive into the medium and get to know the other class participants and their work. I thought it was a great balance between demo/instruction and supported open studio time.”
