Workshop Description:

Discover how to make and use a clay-resist paste to print and paint with it on fabric, and then overdye the work with organic indigo. In our three day workshop you’ll learn how to mix the non-toxic clay-resist paste and the various, inventive methods of applying it. This will include block-printing, screenprinting, stenciling, and direct painting. Then you’ll build on those skills by learning how to make and maintain a vat of organic, fructose indigo, and the techniques for dyeing. Building layers of pattern and imagery with additional resist, your experimentations will create varying shades of beautiful indigo blue.

At the end of class, each student will leave with their samples, recipes, and trade secrets to continue developing these techniques at home.

This workshop includes a kit that will provide all of the necessary ingredients for the resist and indigo vat: Pre-measured Clay (Kaolin + Bentonite), Gum Arabic powder, Sodium Alginate powder, Epsom salt, Indigo, Fructose, Calcium Hydroxide, as well as craft foam and cardboard. Select whether you will pick-up your kit or if you prefer to have it shipped when registering.

All levels welcome!

Registration closes November 18, 2021 for kit shipping orders; November 28 for kit pick-up orders.  With registration, students will receive an additional list of needed supplies to gather/purchase, as well as a quick 1-page “how-to” on downloading and using the Zoom video app.
