About this Workshop:
Participants will learn how to make a Case Bound Box, or Hinged Lid Box, perfect for holding photographs, travel memories, letters, and other keepsakes. Students will learn how to assemble the box, which is similar in construction to a book cover. Students will learn to make the case-bound cover with wrapped paper and book cloth. We will make 2 boxes—a smaller 5 x 7 x 2” box and a larger 9.5 x 12.5 x 2.5” box.
Level: Intermediate – Introduction to Bookmaking or similar bookmaking experience (6 hours) is required.
Registration closes November 30, 2023. Materials fees are included with registration to cover the materials supplied in class. A small list of optional items will also be provided to students to gather/bring to class.

CLASS MATERIALS LIST:
Registration includes a $67 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, board, bookcloth, and glue. In addition, students will need to gather/purchase the following items:
- 4 sheets (18 x 20”) of decorative paper for your boxes—you will use two sheets per box, one sheet for the outside/covers and one sheet for the inside/sides, so you’ll want your pairs of paper to complement one another visually. You can find marbled paper or decorative papers at Paper Source, Plaza Art, Artist & Craftsman, and Blick Art Materials. Pyramid Atlantic also sells hand marbled paper
- (optional) Personal apron
- (optional) Any personal tools you’d prefer to use over the classroom set, such as: a mechanical pencil; metal ruler (12”); Bone folder; Olfa Snap-off or X-acto knife; Scissors
YOUR INSTRUCTOR:
Nathalie A. Ryan is an educator, artist, writer, and musician, enjoying life in DC by wandering, wondering, and experimenting. Since 2002, she has led public programs at the National Gallery of Art and facilitated Professional Development Workshops for K-12 Educators at Harvard Project Zero. A certified mindfulness meditation facilitator and advocate for the role of the arts in nurturing cognitive, social-emotional, and ethical dispositions, Nathalie believes in the power of the arts to help people slow down, notice the world around them in new ways, spark curiosity, and deepen connection with oneself and others.
