Do you have an old book with a cool cover that is collecting dust? Do you wish you could make into a useful object (perhaps something to store secret treasures in)? Look no further! In this class we will take a hardcover book and transform it into a box. You will learn to carefully remove the contents of the book and then—by using the cover in combination with book board, book cloth and decorative paper—you will create a box. The possibilities from there are endless!
Level: Intermediate – Some bookbinding experience (Introduction to Bookmaking) or similar experience (6 hours) with basic cutting folding concepts is preferred, but not required.
Registration closes June 20, 2025. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may want to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.
Registration includes a $30 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including book board, decorative paper, book cloth, and glue. Students will need to supply additional materials of their own, including:
Krista Sharp, a native Oklahoman and a member of the Cherokee Nation, has lived and worked in the Washington, D.C. area for over 23 years. She is a book artist and an award-winning graphic and web designer currently working at the Smithsonian Institution. In 2016, Krista graduated from Corcoran School of Art and Design with a Master of Arts degree in Art and the Book. Her book and print work uses multiple printmaking processes and explores unique structural elements. Krista’s art can be seen in many collections and institutions across the country including the Art Institute of Chicago’s Flaxman Library, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian’s Dibner Library.
