About this Workshop:

In this three-part workshop we will use a simple block printing technique to create an organic floral pattern on paper. Then using watercolor paint and other art mediums, learn to hand tint and add decorative detail to the visual narrative, which will then be made into a beautiful concertina artist’s book.

  • Day 1: We will explore making organic patterns on paper using vintage wooden floral fabric stamps and fluid acrylic paint. Then spend time developing a unique color palette and choosing the art mediums we will use to paint in the decorative detail.
  • Day 2: Using our color palettes and various art mediums, we will hand tint and add other decorative detail to the preprinted pattern.
  • Day 3: We will continue to add to the visual narrative of our books by adding collaged and written elements, learn the accordion folding pattern for our books, and make cloth covered covers.

Level: Beginner—no previous experience necessary!

Registration closes March 7, 2025. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may/will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Anne Barnes is an artist and graphic designer living in Washington, DC. She graduated in June 2020 with an MFA in Visual Arts and worked for many years as a book and cover designer in publishing. Her mixed media work—which includes the use of books as medium and the production of artist’s books—combines a high-keyed color palette, expressive gesture, and symbolic mark-making. The result is the abstracted visualizations of her memories, emotions, and varied perspectives that merge to become metaphors for exploration into themes of human nature, popular culture, feminism, and motherhood. Learn more about her work at www.annebarnesstudio.com and on Instagram @annebarnes_studio.
