About this Workshop:

In this new 4-hour version of the popular Make+Take we will spend some time looking at the unique ways in which certain artists throughout art history have applied distinctive abstracted marks in their work, and then explore techniques in which to apply our own abstracted marks on paper in an intuitive way using multiple mediums. These marks will become the underpinnings for the visual content of the book structure. Then using a slip knot binding, which is an uncomplicated and decorative way to sew pages of an artist book together, we will weave the pages of the book together with added beads and other decorative embellishments.

Level: Beginner – no previous experience necessary

Registration closes April 15, 2025. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students may want to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR:

Anne Barnes is an artist and graphic designer living in Washington, DC. She graduated in June 2020 with an MFA in Visual Arts and worked for many years as a book and cover designer in publishing. Her mixed media work—which includes the use of books as medium and the production of artist’s books—combines a high-keyed color palette, expressive gesture, and symbolic mark-making. The result is the abstracted visualizations of her memories, emotions, and varied perspectives that merge to become metaphors for exploration into themes of human nature, popular culture, feminism, and motherhood. Learn more about her work at www.annebarnesstudio.com and on Instagram @annebarnes_studio
